Letting Go, Hanging On

It was time to downsize and move out of hot and crowded California — our dream after 65 years in one place. Like most artists, I’m a sentimental collector of all things beautiful and memorable, but 65 years of treasures were way more boxes than I wanted to pack.
So I gathered all my favorite collected, made, found and gifted heirlooms, trinkets and mementos, reduced them to their essence, and sewed them together in one place.
This quilt now lives in my new Oregon studio and I can happily hang on while letting go.
Inspired by Rosie Lee Tompkins’ 1968 Untitled quilt that celebrated her move to California — I just made my homage quilt in reverse.
(Vintage ribbons, trims, handmade doll, doll clothes, gum wrapper chain, crocheted animals, shoelace, fabrics designed by me, fabrics found while shopping with friends, vintage quilt shard, grandma’s linen napkins, husband’s silk screen art, beloved dog sweater, preemie baby onesie. Whole cloth cotton backing with hand appliqué and hand embroidery. Hand quilted with perle cotton floss.)
